Memphis Entrepreneurism — Doing it Our Way
Having spent the weekend at Memphis’ first BarCamp, I was struck by how different Memphis is from other cities that are trying to develop an entrepreneurial environment. In most cities an event like this would be filled with white males under the age of 35. Not here. Looking around the rooms, it was obvious to me that we have attracted a different audience. Our audience consists of a mix that, well, looks more like our country. This is in terms of race, gender, physically impaired and not, and pretty much whatever dimension you could think of. I suppose this is also an extension of how LaunchMemphis was organized, as it is also diverse in terms of gender, race, and age. None of this was planned — it is just the natural fabric of Memphis.
And, I was proud. The reason was not that we met some social expectation of diversity, but that we are able to bring a totally unique perspective to startups that most cities cannot. When you bring together such a diverse crowd, you will get diverse opinions. When these different backgrounds are brought to bear on new web applications or social networking strategies, they will be very, very different from a group of young all white male coders. And, I can’t wait to see where it leads. One thing I know for sure is that it won’t look like the gatherings that take place in DC, the Valley, or Austin.

good points, but if i could take your usual cynic ‘tude’…we all just need to be part of building sustainable and profitable startups that are growing and succeeding and thriving. there are so many ideas/concepts out there in memphis, but many of them are needing implementation and funding help. i realize that these are cool seeds that continue to be planted in hopes that something will emerge from all this, but i guess id just like to take 1-2-3 of these ideas and really see it too fruition. maybe getting a swat team of diverse business backgrounds which is more important at this stage then race gender/etc…are you in? (but i promise i do get your angle too)

As you know, I’m in. I’m in way too many right now just trying to cherry pick some that can make some ground. I hope that I am one of the ones who helps to breed the success! I suppose my point is two-fold:
) love, but we can come up with something that the other 98% of America wants because we are not the hard-core tech city and I think we tend to come up with more practical, mainstream solutions.
1. We have to succeed for anyone to care — saying you are a great place for startups doesn’t make it so
2. One of our keys to success will be to bring a unique perspective that other places can’t.
We might not make the cool new, new thing that all the techies ( e.g., me
